Nocturnes

These images are from a project which concluded with an exhibition in the Greenroom Gallery (Cork Arts Theatre). I took a pile of night-time photos around the Dodder, back gardens and other spots but these were all taken on the last night in Dun Laoghaire. The results were completely different there as you have artificial light reflected from the water, not to mention the atmosphere.

Nocturne 2 (Two doors down)
Grainne Galvin was curating and made me and the other artists feel completely at ease about the event. Used gicleé printing process on uncoated watercolour paper for these so the blacks are very heavy in the hard copies.

waxwings in brabazon square

DSC_1253
these birds from scandinavia are paying a flying visit to the square at the moment. when there's a poor berry crop there they come to ireland for their food until it runs out, only happens every few years apparently. they're really tame and don't pay any attention to you. donning little hats that blow in the wind and pink blusher to accentuate their cheek-bones.

Tony MacMahon

DSC_1196
Living legend, national treasure, the greatest irish accordion player to walk the earth.

DSC_1103 He has started to write his memoirs for the JMI. Really really good.

John Kelly

DSC_0634

Had John in the studio for the Nov/Dec JMI issue. He played harmonica with Van Morrison on stage before - an anecdote to be truly jealous of! We happened to have one lying around luckily.

DSC_0636
If you get a chance have a look at John's JMI interview he has interesting views on Irish radio amongst other things.

Ensemble ICC

Dsc_0825_2
New studio's up and running wa-hey! Idea behind this shoot is a bunch of friends in a jumble sale trying out the merchandise. Wanted them to look like a gang rather than the standard ensemble press shots.

Linda Buckley

Dsc_0645
Linda's a composer who plays in a noise band in Berlin, grew up on a farm at the Old Head in Kinsale. Tiger Woods landed in their back garden in a helicopter and her mother told him to get the hell off her land-that's the spirit, pesky golf club!

Bill Whelan

Dsc_0520
Did a shoot with Bill in his house in Dublin, beautiful house it is really something. Ended up talking about the globalisation of Irish music, really interesting stuff. Check out his lectures about this here.

Caoimhín O Raghallaigh

Dsc_0526
Caoimhín's playing around europe at the moment, wanted photos for his & Mick's (O'Brien, piper) up and coming tour of Russia and was just back from Sicily. Not jealous at all. It was his idea to hold out the bow for some pics amongst other good ideas.

Paul Smyth

Dsc_0114
At home, shoot for the May edition of the JMI. One of his own paintings behind him although you can't really see it in this one.
